3 Day Emergency Kit Saves the Day! Again!
Today I used my 72 hour, 3 Day emergency kit to get out of a pickle :) You see it was picture day and we were all scurring around to get the kids duded up, do breakfast, drop off our cheerleader...etc. I hollered at the 13 year old to go get breakfast started. He managed to eat the last bowl of cornflakes and..... you get the picture. Some of the kids dug into the leftover rice and hamburger gravy from the night before but then there's our ever picky 6 year old who refused dinner again, except for a perfectly peeled apple we coaxed down him. He was starving and breakfast for him is the main,if not only meal of the day- by choice- I asked again "What will you eat for Breakfast Ben? How about an egg" He agreed but then I realized the last egg got used up in our favorite Butterscotch Chip cookies the night before (we'd even had to use flaxseed for the 4th egg as we only had 3) Nix on the egg kid. What else?" "How about applesauce" he offered. "I think we're out". "I saw some in the cupboard" " If you can find some you can have it" I replied as I dashed around looking for a pony tail and the missing photo envelope for one of the three having pictures today. Thank goodness only one was a girl! I'm not a hair momma, a good hair day is when my ponytail matches my outfit for the day and my hair is clean. As I passed him kneeling on the floor glancing into the cabinet, I muscled my way through to speed up the process. I'm not seeing any I commented as we dug way to the back, past the shortening and sweetened condensed milk. I think we're out. What about there? Nope the final can was simply an upside down can of refried beans that had fallen behind the shortening and a hundred other miscellaneous cans ranging from minestrone soup and canned yams to tiny cans of green chilies and bean dip. No Applesauce! Bingo the light came on! My emergency kit is fully stocked and ready for action. I raced for the front door and moved the two lighter rubbermaid totes full of things like toilet paper and toothbrushes and got to the heavy tote on the bottom with the canned goods and heavy stuff. On top was a box of graham crackers and underneath was applesauce. Hurray! He even got to have seconds before the bus arrived and I shooed them out the door. The emergency kit saved the day! I was even able to grab out a jar of peanut butter to go along with my breakfast. I had forgotten we were out of that too! What can I say it's grocery day tomorrow and I keep forgetting to remind John to get the eggs that are on sale $1/doz at Albertsons till Wednesday :) No matter how prepared I am, I always seem to run out of something! But seriously folks! With the natural disasters and strange things happening these days. No one can afford to be without an emergency kit of some sort. Like I said earlier, mine consists of rubbermaid totes hidden behind the front door. It's not a perfect kit but we'll be able to eat, drink and stay clean. And if we have enough time we can grab a multitude of other items like sleeping bags, etc. that don't fit in that particular location. Have a great day and if you just can't wait to get prepared until I write up my inventory list. Here's a couple of sites with preparedness information:
